Kate Fox is a stand-up poet, spoken word artist and broadcaster. She is a regular contributor to Radio 4's spoken word cabaret ‘The Verb’, has made two comedy series for BBC Radio 4, been Poet in Residence for the Glastonbury Festival and the Great North Run and completed a PhD in stand-up comedy.

SCRATCH NIGHT

Weds Apr 09

Tickets £6 from Skiddle
Come and see a diverse collection of performances, ranging from theatre and comedy, to spoken word and performance art – literally anything goes.
Scratch Nights are exciting for audiences – they get to see a number of performers and performances from different genres. Expect new work, experimental work, excerpts from longer shows.
Expect performance to be between five mines and 30mins long. Performances will be selected via a call out (deadline February 16, 2025). Expect between four and eight different pieces. Full details of the works being performed will be published after the call out deadline.
Scratch Nights offer an evening dedicated to the development of brand-new work. A chance for artists to put early ideas in front of a live audience to see what sticks. You might be seeing the early beginnings of ideas that will one day turn into fully formed shows.
These informal nights bring new live work to audiences and create a supportive platform for artists to experiment, take risks, test ideas on stage and share new work with peers and wider public. The audience will be offered the opportunity to provide feedback for the performers.
Please note earlier start time of 7.30pm.
What is a Scratch Night?
A Scratch Night is an informal event where artists, playwrights, directors and performers present works in progress, usually in front of an audience.
The ‘scratch’ term comes from the idea of showing something that’s in its early, raw, or rough stage, like a scratch of an idea, as opposed to a fully polished production.
These events are often used as a testing ground for new ideas, and they might feature short performances, excerpts from larger works, or experimental pieces.
Scratch nights are popular in theater and performance arts but can also apply to other creative fields, like dance, music, and film. The audience’s feedback can be an important part of the process, helping creators refine and develop their work further.
They are often more casual, with minimal staging and a focus on the concept or performance rather than elaborate production values.

Zoe's Big 30th WITH Decade And A Day, Zvilnik and Tom Turrican!
Bar legend Zoe is gonna be 30, so we're going to celebrate in style with a night of music and quite probably shots. Oh lord the shots.
So who's playing?
Well, DECADE AND A DAY are coming up from the mysterious midlands to headline with a righteous blast of pop punk/alt rock. There may be some Shrek 2 related shenanigans and a distinct possibility of crocs.
And then...?
Glad you asked. ZVILNIK are going to perform a live musical seance to channel the adventurous spirit of Nikola Tesla onto the stage. One drummer/one guitarist. Both sing. Prepare to be mocked if you believe the earth is flat - this is *science*, bitches.
Surely that's not all?
It is not! The festivities will be opened by Preston hero and man-of-the-people TOM TURRICAN who will do more with one beat up lookin' guitar than you can do with seven. Because you can't play the guitar. Don't worry, let him do it for you.

In a world divided, what might happen when we allow ourselves to dream? This is the question at the heart of Dross' first one-queen theatrical show.
Having cut her teeth on the cabaret circuit across the UK, developing a unique performance style that blends spectacle with deep vulnerability, Dross brings her unique show to The ferret, Preston.
What are the stories that we choose to tell to and about ourselves? How do the ghosts of the past shape our future? And how can we mould the world around us? An Evening with Dross charts a course across a constellation of contradictions - weaving a thread that is equal parts biography and fantasy.
An Evening with Dross is a kaleidoscopic, multimedia patchwork of a life.
“An intelligent and thoughtful reflection on LGBTQ+ identity and community. This is Queer Church!” ★★★★★ Audience review, Shakespeare North Playhouse
“Beautiful, smart and hilarious in waves” Audience review, QUARRY Liverpool.

Name of the Dame is the fast-paced, comedy-two-hander that left audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in stitches. The hour-long play is written and performed by comedians Kate McCabe and Adam Perrott.
Dames, detectives, stylish hats, ‘car chases’... this parody of the film noir genre has got a gag rate that fires faster than a Tommy-gun and is marginally less painful. If you like Airplane, the oeuvre of Mel Brooks, dicey puns and sight gags, this show is probably for you.
With entertainment as the objective, the show makes the promise that ‘You will learn nothing from this play. Nor will you experience personal growth or important revelations’.
NOTD is influenced by the likes of satirical masterpieces AIRPLANE and POLICE SQUAD. The film noir genre is firmly in the crosshairs with a gag-rate that fires faster than a Tommy Gun.
Come see the play that reviewers say ‘has broad appeal – silly, daft, hilarious, and highly entertaining’, is ‘easily the best show I’ve seen at The Fringe’ and is ‘hilarious from the first second’.

It shows the development and changes in the relationship of the two characters and the consequences of his actions.
In the aftermath of a blurry night, Eve wakes up disoriented and half-dressed. Amidst the scattered remnants of the night before, she grapples with the unsettling gaps in her recollections, while James, with his own hidden agenda, tries to manage the situation. Tension mounts as Eve’s piecemeal revelations hint at a darker truth, leaving her to question everything, including James’ intentions.
This is Baines’ first original piece of work, having recently graduated from Preston College’s Actor Training Academy. In 2024, Baines was one of two Lancaster Playwriting Prize winners, funded by the Dukes Theatre in Lancaster and Lancaster University.
The play is part of the new commissions program for Lancashire Fringe Festival.

CANINE TEETH by Ayse Balkos
Canine Teeth is a stand up monologue combining live spoken word and soundscapes with storytelling and visual landscape created through visual projection. (Istanbul streets, Turkish culture).
It is a voyage and return – moving into the past, digging ever deeper (into oneself, into relations) – fundamentally journeying from here to discover something that’s over there, and then coming back transformed so the audience may experience the place Ayse started in a new way. This story begins inside, and moves out.
Canine Teeth was developed after Balkos released her collection of poems and songs, “Come To Tower and actively discovered a line through them that connected the works during “Making Autobiographical Theatre Workshop run by On The Run Theatre 2022. The project received an Arts Council Lottery Project Funding with presentations at the Migration Matters Festival and Dorothy Pax in Sheffield in summer of 2022.
About Ayse Balkos:
Ayse walks across the stage and talks about the Turkish culture she was growed in.
A story which has not been heard before that takes place during a day against the back drop of a Turkish society obsessed with marriage and women. Ayse’s stand up show, Canine Teeth is an insightful and ultimately harrowing look at the life of a young Turkish woman.
Rooted in Ayse’s lived experiences, the show is a journey into an alternative reality of a modern and westernized Turkish woman and the clash of family, freedom and faith.
A work about grief, gender, economic and social discrimination. A young women’s relatable experience.

Luke Wright's Silver Jubilee
luke wright’s jubilee
Weds, November 8th, 2023
—-
Crack out the bunting! It’s Luke Wright’s Silver Jubilee. Over twenty-five years, Luke Wright has built up a reputation for being one of Britain’s most popular live poets.
He has won an unprecedented four Saboteur Awards (national awards for spoken word), a Stage Award, and a Fringe First. He’s sold out shows across the world and regularly tours with John Cooper Clarke and The Libertines.
This year, thwarted in his attempts to hold a street party by the philistines on the council and unable to shift the over-ordered commemorative plates, Wright does what a poet does best, and takes a deep dive into himself.
What follows is his most confessional show to date. Wright was adopted as a baby and grew up believing that his adoption “wasn’t a big thing.” But one night he idly stumbled across his birth mother on Facebook.
This window to a world that might have been his has thrown up deep questions about privilege, familial love, and destiny.
This show is an excavation of lives lived and not lived. Wright navigates his audience through a warm and honest hour of poems and stand-up with the directness and pathos that has made him one of the most popular live poets in England.
With some wild experiments in form, a nervous kitten called Sir John Betjeman and a healthy smattering of drum n bass, Wright manages to navigate some heart-wrenching material and keep the laughs coming.

“Luke is on fire! A poetic interrogation of himself, who he is and where he is from that leaves you tenderised and bruised and with a little something in your eye” Mark Thomas
“His performances rumble with rage, passion and humour” Guardian
“He must be on some kind of dope” John Cooper Clarke
“Cool Poems” Patti Smith
“Fierce, wistful, romantic and witty. A sensational hour” ★★★★★ Stage
“Curiously classless, perfectly placed to dissect the dreams of the British nation. His lexical acrobatics are astounding, often motor-mouthed and breathtakingly honest” ★★★★★ The List
“One of the funniest and most brilliant poets of his generation” Independent
“Visceral, poignant and riotously funny” ★★★★★ Scotsman

Kevin P Gilday: Spam Valley
Kevin P Gilday: Spam Valley
Weds, October 4th, 2023
—
Critically acclaimed writer and performer Kevin P. Gilday (Suffering from Scottishness, Sonnet Youth) takes a verbal sledgehammer to lazy stereotypes and attempts to deconstruct what it really means to be ‘working-class’ in modern Britain. Spam Valley is a hilarious, autobiographical monologue exploring what happens when a working-class upbringing gives way to a middle-class career path. Blending theatre, stand-up and contemporary spoken word; Gilday delves into his own Glaswegian upbringing to chart his journey, from ‘Spam Valley’ to the stage, with trademark wit and delivery. Spam Valley is politically charged theatre at its best.
After a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe which garnered critical acclaim, including a five star review, the show hit the road for a mini-tour taking in performances at the iconic Stand comedy clubs. It is now available for booking for one-off performances throughout Oct/Nov 2023.
‘I wanted to make a show that challenged the way we view working class culture while still sharing the messy joy of it’, says Gilday. ‘We only ever seem to see one version of working class life in the media and it often doesn’t relate to my lived experience. I wanted to question that narrative, to attempt to find the truth about working class identity – or the multitudes of it. To do that I needed to delve into my own complex relationship with my upbringing and where I am now as an artist. It’s a personal show with a universal appeal, a hilarious night out with a big message of acceptance at its core.’
About Kevin P. Gilday:
Kevin P. Gilday is an award-winning poet, writer and performer from Glasgow. He is the founder of poetry performance collective The Scribbler's Union and was co-founder of much loved spoken word cabaret night Sonnet Youth. He is a National Theatre of Scotland Breakthrough Writer, a BBC Writersroom Scottish Voice and one of Scotland’s most celebrated contemporary poets.
Kevin has performed all over the world, from Hollywood to East Kilbride, including major festivals (BBC 6Music Festival, Glastonbury), Fringes (Edinburgh, Toronto, Vancouver) as well as large scale tours of the UK, Germany, Canada and the US. He has supported artists and public figures such as Akala, Saul Williams, George the Poet, Jackie Kay, Liz Lochhead, Sage Francis, The Silencers and Jeremy Corbyn MP.
His theatre work includes writing, performing, directing and production credits on hit shows Suffering from Scottishness, Exiles, Gigantic Lying Mouth, thick skin, elastic heart and Confessionals.
