While some bands make music that pats you on the back, The Lounge Society makes music that kicks you in the teeth - just like nature intended. Hailing from Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, they are the next to emerge from the contagious 'Calder Sound', alongside Working Men's Club, The Orielles and WH Lung. An unruly bunch of talented multi-instrumentalists (Interchanging roles between guitar and bass) The Lounge Society have pioneered a fresh approach to an eclectic range of influences spanning from The Fall and Talking Heads to The Velvet Underground and Fat White Family. Infectious bursts of sound, forged in the darkest underbelly of Post Punk, New Wave and Funk-Punk, sculpted with swirling guitars, heavy bass lines and spiky, angular, driving rhythms. This culminates in a surging tide of noise that can only be described as Cold War Pop. Their debut single 'Generation Game' combines all elements of their sound, and creates an intense, driving and explosive politically charged anthem. The track released on Dan Careys Speedy Wunderground immediately took flight, with the track becoming the fastest selling 7' in the label’s history, and the second act to receive a repress of 500 copies, with the only other act to achieve such a feat being Black Midi.

“A lively and assured sound, embracing a slowly tempering association of atmospheric meddling and sprawling distortion, revelling in the forceful potency they create in waves” – So Young Magazine

__________

We're mega pleased to announce the fantastic Julia Bardo as support for The Lounge Society at The Ferret.

Formerly providing the chugging post-punk as a member of Working Men’s Club, Julia recently stepped out of her comfort zone and into a magical world of melodic solo performance.

“If anything, above all else tonight proves the absolute gorgeousness of her songs. Is it hip to write catchy tunes these days? Something tells me Julia Bardo cares not a jot for fashions and whatnot. It’s a tricky tightrope to balance, the honest celebration of melodies and yet somehow staying apart and special.” - Bido Lito Live Review

SEAMUS MCLOUGHLIN:

Frontman of The Capital - his songs are expressive and poignant. A compelling performer whose rich vocals augment the evocative imagery they poetically describe.

---

RESONATE:

Singer-songwriters Ike James and Harry Boothroyd make up this talented acoustic duo from The Fylde

---

CROSSBILL:

Crossbill is an acoustic-led-indie-pop band from Preston. Some people say they have a bit of a Belle and Sebastian vibe, maybe a bit like Withered Hand too. The songs are simple & melodic, easy to relate to with a subtle tendency towards being depressingly upliftingly regretfully reminiscent, or something.

TONY WRIGHT (Terrorvision Frontman)

Tony Wright is best known as the singer for Bradford rock band Terrorvision. However, when he's not touring with Terrorvision, he writes, records and tours under his own name with a setlist made up of songs he has written on his acoustic guitar - some upbeat, some melancholic, but all thought-provoking.

To say Tony is a busy man would be an understatement. In addition to his three albums with his post-Terrorvision band ‘LaikaDog’, he has now released two solo albums to date with a third one in the works.

The Avenhams:

With roots in Preston (their name alone gives that away) The Avenhams have been making their way in Manchester with their indie rock'n'roll sound. Their recent singles '2am Soda' and 'Busy' have garnered critical praise and radio play, and they're ready to return to hometown Preston for a headline show at Preston's #1 live music venue.

Listen on Spotify: sptfy.com/the-avenhams

DR!FTWOOD:

These Preston lads have been making a name for themselves with their exceptional live performances and tight musicianship. Their lush sounding, commercially slanted pop rock sound has taken them as far afield as The Great Escape Festival in Brighton and Camden Rocks Festival in London. Back on home turf, they hit The Ferret stage with a tight set of original indie-pop music.

Listen on Spotify: sptfy.com/driftwood

Reilly James:

While the Singer & Producer originally focused on producing club tracks and beats, Reilly has turned to an indie-electronic sound combining his dance production with indie guitars and vocals which creates a unique and distinctive sound. He brings us a solo acoustic set this week, showcasing his songwriting and vocal skills.

BINGO BAY:

Bingo Bay are an alt/rock/pop band from Preston, formed in 2005 by singer/songwriter Kevin Cross. Catchy, melodic songs fused with elements of pop/punk/garage and funk with the odd ballad. 'We follow our own pathway regardless of fads and fashions.'

Support comes from ONE SIDED HORSE:

“…I’m loving One Sided Horse, very Tom Waits, Asylum Years era” – Gideon Coe BBC 6Music.

In 2013, Mark Whiteside, who up to this point had worked with numerous singer songwriters and been used as a session drummer on a variety of albums, decided that he wanted to stand, or sit, at the front of the stage rather than the back. Following this decision, it was just a matter of buying an acoustic guitar and to start the process of learning painful chords to sing dark love songs to.

The resultant songs saw the light of day in 2018 when Mark released his first album under the One Sided Horse banner: Between Light & Space, recorded with four members of Embrace, received a glowing 8/10 review from Louder Than War magazine, and is a powerful representation of Mark’s work, a masterpiece of melancholy.

“… think The National, Tindersticks, even Richard Hawley, a momentous glory of stings that pull at your heartstrings…” 8/10 review, Louder Than War.

Geese + David Shurr - Socially Distanced Gig - Evening Show

GEESE:

“A gleeful ram-raid of 20th Century Popular Music”

Formed around 2015 from the carcasses of various bands from around their native Lancashire, guitarist Matt Gerrard, drummer Chris McKendrick and bassist Lewis Hill call Geese “an experiment in time-travelling genre-fluidity.” Their collective musical background covers everything from Math-rock to retro Hip-Hop, via New Orleans Jazz and big-band RnB, and they’re dipping toes in every aesthetic they can find along the way, trying to distill the ever- elusive “familiar yet new” sounds hiding in-between them.

Their debut EP “Fierce Brosnan” (2016) Gleefully bounds over everything from jittery Gypsy jazz, through swooning 50s pop and bristlingly soulful 60s garage rock. Their 2020 full length album “Something For The Weakened” dabbles in quirky delta blues, jazzy folk, spiky New Wave and Queen-esque ornate prog-pop with seemingly wilful disregard for their audience’s ability to categorise them as one style or another. To further confound this, the band have been known to record and perform songs in-character as their fictional musical “influences,” to bolster their time-travelling shtick.

Support comes from DAVID SHURR:

Listen closely as British-born David Shurr draws from his American familial roots and multicultural upbringing (raised in South East Asia) to form his own alt-pop niche of poetic lyricism, jangling guitars, psyche-swirling melodies and tea towel drumbeats.

Determined to rival the popular one-man productions of Andy Shauf, Tame Impala, & Kurt Vile, David Shurr has a keen ear that combines ethnic musics with sounds reminiscent of the most beloved British songsmiths.

'David pens beautiful, patient, evocative tunes which you’ll be humming all the way home” - Band On The Wall, Manchester

Out now on all platforms, Killing time is a fantastic single from the songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer: https://youtu.be/PGx9YfUpiJw

DESIGN REWIND:

With influences that include Hall & Oates, Steely Dan, The 1975 & Toto, Design Rewind have been described as a “modern throwback” drawing from a cherished era in songwriting to create a fresh sound. They rocked our livestream gig series back in February (seems like a lifetime ago) - and we can't wait for you to see them in the flesh. A tight rhythm section, catchy vocals & guaranteed chair dancing.

Support comes from MILLICENT:

Recent winner at the North West Music Awards, MILLICENT is a Ferret veteran. MILLICENT, who studies Songwriting at BIMM Manchester, is a dream-pop vocalist whose alternative style has attracted the attention of BBC Introducing: Manchester and The Voice UK. With mental health being a subject close to her heart, MILLICENT has acted to help break the stigma around mental health.

Her latest track is an intimate outpouring of her struggles with anxiety and uses witty lyricism to portray her difficulty in modern communication. It also tackles the downward spiral of worry that ensues after conversations can lead to overthinking and self-doubt.
