BCUC: Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness - Indigenous funk, hiphop consciousness and punk rock energy from Soweto, South Africa.

"Loved their set, it was one of my highlights of a great weekend" - Nick Dewey, Glastonbury Festival

"Without a doubt the best live act I saw"- Gilles Peterson

"Guaranteed to touch untapped corners of your soul" - Okayafrica

"The most impressive newcomers this year" - The Guardian

From humble beginnings, rehearsing in a shipping container a stone's throw from the church where Desmond Tutu organised the escape of the most wanted anti-Apartheid activists of Soweto, BCUC have grown to become one of the world's most celebrated bands, playing the biggest stages at some of the most important festivals in the world: Glastonbury West Holts, Roskilde, Afropunk Brooklyn, Worldwide, Womad, Boomtown, Colours of Ostrava & many more.

Like its elders, Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness sees its music as a hedonistic trance, but also as a weapon of political and spiritual liberation. 2023 even saw them win the prestigious Womex Artist Award, an accolade usually reserved for much older artists, in recognition of their fearless work ethic and prodigiously transformational live shows.

The seven-piece band has been mesmerising audiences both locally and globally with its indigenous funk and high-energy performances that have fast made it one of South Africa's most successful musical exports. Artistic heirs to Philip "Malombo" Tabane and Batsumi, they give contemporary voice to the ancestral traditions of indigenous peoples. Jazz sounds of 1970s and '80s productions replaced by hip-hop influences and punk-rock energy, taking the listener on an intriguing epic journey, sharing their controversial yet interesting views on modern Africa. They tackle the harsh realities of the voiceless, especially the plight of the uneducated workers at the bottom of the social food chain.

BCUC taps into the elusiveness of the spirit world of ancestors by which they are inspired. The Africa portrayed by BCUC is not poor, but rich in tradition, rituals and beliefs.

"We bring fun and emo-indigenous Afro psychedelic fire from the hood," says vocalist Kgomotso Mokone.

Chiminyo made this video to help you understand...

https://youtu.be/-HG_eTnQkB4?si=znqLVxqZYNbY5DFp

Chiminyo is a drummer and producer based in North London who combines the raw, immediate live sound of percussion and the futuristic timbres of his electronic productions to create his own, daring soundworld. Via laboriously self-coded software, each cymbal crash and drum hit triggers a synth or sample, allowing Chiminyo complete control and freeing him of all loops, click-tracks and backing tracks.

As well as his own solo project, Chiminyo performs and records with some of the leading figures of the UK’s music scene, including one of The Ferret’s faves K.O.G, spiritual jazz-leaning outfit Maisha and psychedelic energy bomb Cykada. He has also collaborated and recorded with Gary Bartz, Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings, Theon Cross, and Zara McFarlane.

The up-and-coming musician’s debut EP entitled ‘I Am Chiminyo’ was a visceral introduction to his all-encompassing universe. Described by Clash magazine as “a startingly inventive percussive workout”, the EP flows through a cascade of ethereal arpeggios, thumping basslines, and heavy, dance-inducing beats. Critically-acclaimed by the likes of Gilles Peterson, BBC 1Xtra and Jazz FM, it indirectly earned Chiminyo the Jazz FM Digital Award whilst the track ‘Kandy Lanx’ was nominated for a Worldwide FM Award.

LA FRENCH:

La French is a multi instrumentalist/producer based in Lancashire. Combining his love of hip hop, jazz and electronica he fuses these genres with an ambient warmth.

TEMPORARY BODIES:

Temporary Bodies is the new project from Preston-based artist Mike Warburton (Barium Network / Utopian Mechanics). Based entirely around live, improvised performance - on-the-spot loops are fed through an array of fx pedals to create layers of sonorous strings and pads, swirling ambient textures and melodies that range from the Baroque to the bleak.

Inspired by the characteristics of artists like Grouper, MJ Guider, Silent Servant and Deaf Center amongst many more, Temporary Bodies also uses hypnotic drum loops, orchestral motifs and sparse vocals to build a dense, cathartic experience that guides the listener through themes of loss and longing into a place of quiet optimism.

TABES:

Melodic polyrhythms, anarchic dancing, lyrics about stuff.
